Francoise found that Rhona is starring in a new movie called Four Saints, which will film in Canada:

Principal photography is scheduled to start in mid-October for Four Saints, which will star The Princess Bride's Cary Elwes, British actress Rhona Mitra and The Mummy's Arnold Vosloo. It tells the true story of four nurses who defy the British army by setting up a medical station in Flanders during the First World War.

Rho takes BP to task

Can someone explain to me why people choose to read articles that are clearly about an actor's political opinions and ten whine in the comments section tat no one wants to hear an actor's opinions?

Anyway, Rho gave an interview about BP, her volunteer efforts, her lifestyle, etc, with PopEater:

'The Gates' Star Rhona Mitra Rails Against BP

Rhona Mitra, the gorgeous English actress who stars in ABC's deliciously fun new hit, 'The Gates' is deeply involved in the gulf cleanup. The show films in Louisiana so Mitra has spent countless hours working with the charity Global Green. She is eloquent and outraged by what has been going on, describing BP's handling of the disaster which she calls, "shocking," an, "embarrassment," and likens BP paying fishing trawlers as, "going round to your house, beating up your mum and now paying you for the honor of wiping up her tears."

How did you become involved with cleanup efforts?
I've been working in Louisiana since March of this year and obviously the spill happened and I as the rest of the world watched it all unfold. I think I wasn't as aware probably because of my youth of previous oil spills that took place like Exxon Valdez and I think as a result of being a more conscientious human being, it really sunk in what this meant globally, not just, oh this is happening in the gulf. So I signed up to volunteer on six different sites and help clean up with wildlife.

As the days passed and the weeks passed I think everyone realized that we were heading into that ambiguous territory of, how many months are we going to be dealing with this now? It just so happened that a friend of mine is a very staunch environmentalist reminded me about Matt Petersen and his group Global Green who have been and are still making great headway. Since Katrina they've been one of the only organizations to stay down there. I got in touch with them and they've had a great influence down there. I got in touch with them, heard what they were doing and went down there and talked with Billy Nungesser (President of Plaquemines Parish).

So what volunteer work do you do?
I work with Global Green. You can't volunteer that's the whole point. The corporate sheriffing that's taken place as a result of BP being put in charge of the cleanup. You can't get within I believe 65 feet of any of the cleanup there. It's totally been taken care of by BP which is something that I think generally everyone is trying to lift so organizations and the government can get a hand in there and see exactly what they are or aren't doing. The approach that we're taking and I'm now getting involved in is to talk with the communities who are I suppose, looking to alternative ways of living which involve clean energy and sustainable living, solar power and wind turbines to relieve them and ourselves of this addiction and co-dependent relationship we have with oil companies and governments. It involves self empowerment. It involves talking to the likes of Nungesser who has shown great interest and great initiative in implementing the hypothetically right now, mindset of a cleaner oil free future for his parish.

A lot of people criticize Hollywood stars for appearing hypocritical about green issues. If you got offered the lead in a Tom Cruise movie and they offer to fly you around in a private jet, what would you do?
I've been offered private jets throughout my whole career. I've never taken one. I pride myself on riding a bicycle around as many places as I can. Listen first of all I'm not a celebrity at all. I'm a working actress that some people recognize. I wouldn't dream to put myself in Tom Cruise's realm.

It's a compelling hypothetical situation ...
I know, but I'm very aware of people who want to be seen doing the right thing on the exterior so they can make themselves feel better. I have implemented things in my life that I do behind closed doors that on the outside don't look like anything. For example I'm a vegan, which is a very touchy area because when people hear you're vegan they're like, 'That's so righteous.'

At the moment I'm converting an old car into bio diesel which is much like rescuing a shelter dog so if I want to drive I can boil up a vat of vegetable oil and I don't need to go to a gas station. That relieves me of the anxiety of having to depend on the government or oil companies to supposedly do the right thing. I just want to be somebody who is taking part in not contributing to any more destruction of the planet.

What would you say the average person can do to be greener?
I think being what is dubbed a "locarian" [someone who eats only locally produced food] has such a great impact. I don't think people quite grasp how big that is. We've just become very spoilt, myself included. It's taken me a gradual few years of just being really conscientious and figuring out what makes me happy, what do I need to live not what I want and that's a value shift.

Living with the soil and giving back to the planet, this is where people go ugh but fundamentally we've lost our relationship with the soil and that's our life source. We have to look at being self sufficient and cutting an umbilical cord so to speak to these big mega corporations and governments who are tied in. You get into dangerous territory talking about whose in bed with whom but it is what it is and it's been going on for decades.

Francoise translated the French review of The Gates for us:

ABC will be widely exploited for two years the theme of appearances and false pretenses. It still serves as goodwill to Desperate Housewives, but it was enriched with several variants for the moment none market. Eastwick, based on the novel The Witches of Eastwick, lasted one season while Happy Town, was completed last week. The idea is that people, whose past or secrets are not disreputable, live among us, in our residential neighborhoods and they present a threat to our security. Simply put, monsters hiding among us. The Gates ventures to turn on the trail largely buoyed by our benchmarks paranoid, but this time the fashion vampires.

It was believed that supernatural stories of blood drinkers were melting into the darkness with the gradual suffocation of the Twilight phenomenon. With the notable exception of True Blood which has found a voice and originality. ABC had held the idea of the pilot at the beginning of 2009, but the series was given the green light late in the year for a 13-episode format used during the summer. As we are a large network, things do not suffer from ambiguity and description of the framework, even suggestively, is insistent enough to make no mistake about it.

We are therefore at the Gates a residential city chic, whose entrance is protected by fences and has all aspects of a fort. As announced in a banner in the center, this city is "More Than A Place To Live". With a game on the meaning of this statement, depending on how one reads the sentence, may suggest a small paradise on Earth or to hell and a place where you can die. The place, which is the culmination of the project conducted by a businessman, has a city police equipped with all the latest electronic systems. A dog could not pee against a lamp post without anyone knowing. Whenever you accept the premise that extreme security, calling into question some of your privacy and your right to privacy is the key to happiness, you can live happily in this world.

The scenery thus posed, one discovers a family, the Radcliff is not quite exemplary neighbors contrary to popular belief and contrary to what they claim. Claire Radcliffe (Rhona Mitra) is a vampire once "manufactured" by her husband, Dylan (Luke Mably) who is the CEO of a major biotechnology company. They are parents of a little girl and must hide their position to avoid compromising the happiness of the child. Unfortunately, Claire is lively uncontrollable impulses. It does not take this state she has not chosen and which is a curse for her. It has a vampire who suffers from a guilty conscience and another who tries to control her condition. It is widely thought to True Blood and the discourse on tolerance and the need to improve its kind to integrate socially.

Everything changes when the local police chief retires and is replaced by a former inspector of the crime squad in Chicago, Nick Monohan (Frank Grillo), who moves with her family. His cop instincts earned him some professional setbacks and forced to begin a new life. Again, it was the very classic. A family leaves a life to start another in a place that at first she perceives as idyllic. Finally, the wheel will turn in their favor and luck will be on their side. It seems clear that Monahan had left purgatory to hell, and Nick, not only does not bounce, but will sink. As always in these cases, it is Monohan who are our eyes and our ears. They, newcomers, who will guide us through the maze of the community protected to the extreme and closed.

Monohan not imagine he will face wild beasts, but his reflexes sharp hunter remain sufficiently to allow him to sniff immediately that something is wrong within the family Radcliff. It is quite funny to note that he can feel more that he can base his suspicions on the facts. We find here an old idea and often used: the one who must fight the monsters has a good chance of becoming like them. The best thing is that it shows some predisposition for this kind of combat.

Finally the main story is coupled with a secondary frame that takes place in high school (and here we are right in Twilight in the vein) in which children are educated Monohan. After the first episode, they are werewolves that haunt the corridors of the school, not vampires. There is no reason that parents have the secrets and that their offspring are of little angels without history. Both the main story is pretty well built and the suspense is well managed, as can be fed on fears that other side of the story. The writers Grant Scharbo and Richard Hatem did they want to rake in more widely? Hopefully no. Car not essential, and using strings already well worn, The Gates seems a tad brighter than what we saw recently landed.

Filmed in Louisiana by Little Engine and Summerland Pictures Entertainment in collaboration with Fox Television Studios. Executive Producers: Gina Matthews, Grant Scharbo, Richard Hatem. Producers: Scott Nimerfro, Steve Miner, Dennis Murphy. Director: Terry McDonough. Writers: Scharbo, Hatem.

Claire Radcliff (Rhona Mitra), Nick Monahan (Frank Grillo), Sarah Monahan (Marisol Nichols), Dylan Radcliffe (Luke Mably), Charlie Monahan (Travis Caldwell), Andie Bates (Skyler Samuels), Devon (Chandra West), Brett Crezski (Colton Haynes), Leigh Turner (Janina Gavankar) Marcus Jordan (Justin Miles)

The Gates' ratings

Roobecca (pardon) found a write-up of The Gates' ratings, which seems to have done quite a bit better than everyone was expecting/has been saying!

“The Gates” (10:00-11:00 p.m.)

Growing from its lead-in at 10:00 p.m. by 15% in Adults 18-49, ABC’s series debut of “The Gates” (1.5/5) finished a strong No. 1 against its network competition in the hour, beating CBS by 50% (1.0/3) and NBC by 67% (0.9/3).

“The Gates” boosted the hour for ABC over the year-ago night by 25% in Adults 18-49 (1.5/4 vs. 1.2/4), pulling the Net’s top summer rating in the time slot since 2006 – since 9/3/06.
In Adults 18-49, “The Gates” stands as TV’s top-rated summer scripted series debut in 1 year and ABC’s highest in 5 years – since 6/24/09 and 6/28/05, respectively.

TV By the Numbers. That's great news! ABC must be very happy with how it performed. Hopefully it continues to pull in such strong ratings!

And here are a few articles/reviews about The Gates: Los Angeles Times ("The Gates," on the other hand, starts off with an even greater number of well-worn characters and storylines, but writers Richard Hatem and Grant Scharbo infuse them with a lot more life and a surprisingly high incidence of poignancy."), The New York Times ("“The Gates” mocks a notion that the “Twilight” books purvey with a creepy and twisted seriousness — that rough sex and marital sacrifice are cure-alls for small-town tedium. And while it is having its fun, “The Gates” also manages to mow down sleazy real estate developers, Ivy League obsession, health spas and the upper-middle-class woman’s terror of carbohydrates. Long live summer television!"), The New York Daily News (""The Gates" could get scary, and the gated-community setting creates a decent enough metaphor for the privileged life. The show just doesn't add enough fresh blood to dramas and situations we may simply have seen too often."), Entertainment Weekly ("It’s clear that The Gates wants to be a satire of suburbia with knowing winks to our rampant vampire-mania, but to be satire, the show would have to be clever. About the most clever The Gates gets is when Claire tries to hide some blood she’d drained in a few bottles of the family wine collection.").

Rho Did an Interview with Fearnet

June 17, 2010

Rho did an interview with Fearnet to discuss The Gates.

Exclusive: Rhona Mitra Opens Up 'The Gates'
How did you get involved in The Gates? What drew you to this project?

From what I understand, the producers were pretty far along in the casting process, but they were having a hard time finding my character. I think that they had reached out to see if I was available, but I wasn't. I changed agencies, and someone from the show was with this agency as well. My name was brought up, and this person said that they didn't think I would be available, but as it turned out, I was.

They sent me the script on a Friday, and I would have had to start the next week, so I had to make a quick decision and get my tushy down to Louisiana and morph into a vampire/housewife. As fate would have it, the creators of the show, a husband-wife team, Grant Scharbo and Gina Matthews, are actually people I had met before, socially, who said they wanted to work with me. I hadn't put two and two together. They did.

What can you tell us about your character, Claire?

Claire is, on the surface, a wonderful, beautiful, pristine wife and mother. She has an abundance of elegance and decorum, and culinary skills! But that is just on the surface. She lives in a community where appearances are everything. Everything revolves around what your neighbors think, behaving a certain way, and keeping up to certain standards. With all that comes a lot of pressure, for anyone. But in Claire's case, not only does she have to sustain a certain image, but she is concealing a dark secret of "addiction," in a basic sense.

Was it fun to play a dark character... or creature?

She's actually not that dark. That's one of the things that drew me to her. Looking at the possibility and potential of these -- what have been dubbed "creatures," or even monsters in some minds -- the possibility of what would happen if they lived in our society today. How would we coexist with them, how would that affect them? I suppose they might become a hybrid of sorts. I would say she is 70 percent human, and 30 percent vampire. Vampires seem to have evil, vengeful, selfish connotations. Our take on Claire is that her life doesn't revolve around sucking the life out of people. She wants to have a life, be a mother, and exist in whatever normality she might have. She doesn't want to be a slave to this "demon." For some this is easier, which is why we liken it to addiction. She doesn't find it is that easy to quell her appetites.

I think that is why people are drawn to vampires. They are, potentially, an extension of ourselves. They aren't like werewolves; they look like us, just a more refined, elegant version. Claire is all of that, but unfortunately she gives in to her weakness every once in a while. She finds no pleasure in it; in fact, she beats herself up over it.

It's a fun role, that's for sure. And I get to make cupcakes!

What other kinds of monsters can we expect to see in The Gates?

There are vampires and werewolves and witches... but I don't want to ruin any surprises. A few things will come up that I don't think you've seen before. It's not that I don't want to tell you, but it is more fun for you to see when it comes up. But living within human society, there are a number of different "breeds."

Do all of these creatures know of each other? Can you "sniff it out" on each other?

Yes. We [the creatures] all know each other, but the humans don't know who we are. There are certain rules we all comply to -- or are supposed to comply to. Because of our heightened senses we all know who each other is, and it is supposed to be a copacetic existence, but you know how it goes... like with the vampire/werewolf thing. They don't get on very well.

You do have a lot of experience with the whole vampire/werewolf issue.

Maybe a little more than the average person! I actually really enjoy it. I think working with Michael Sheen and Bill Nighy [on Underworld: Rise of the Lycans] gave me an appetite -- no pun intended -- to continue in the genre. It's so fun, and you have so much poetic license. There is no rule of thumb for vampires or werewolves. You adhere to a certain amount and the rest is up to you. There is a lot of freedom in that.

The thing that is so fantastic about the "monsters" in our show, as many call them, is that they are not outwardly monsters. They are, potentially, an extension of ourselves. I get to be versions of myself, then I get to play other versions of myself that are hidden. It's like eternally being a child, using my imagination. It's so much more appealing than some procedural crime-drama. Bill Nighy and Michael Sheen, two fantastic actors, came back to a franchise three times over because they love it! There is a lot to be enjoyed.

So if they were to do another Underworld, would you be on board for it?

I think I ended up being burned in the sunlight in the last film, so unless they go back somehow, I don't know how they would bring me back. But if they did ask me back, I would do it. Especially if Bill and Michael were doing it again.

Thrillers notoriously don't do well during summer season. What will make The Gates stand out?

There is a voyeuristic element to the show. The producers have created an environment that could possibly exist somewhere. I think there is a reality to it. We have dynamics between husbands and wives, parents and children, that we can all relate to. But you add in these supernatural elements and you get people thinking how would these "people" interact if they weren't just out to get each other. But it's not dark. There is enough camp in it to make it good summer fare.

I wonder if it bodes well for we Rho fans that she's featured so prominently in not only the promo images but in all of the trailers?

Rho is one of those people that just get more attractive with age.

Stargate Universe actor David Blue gave an interview to io9 and mentioned Rhona:

{Re: Lucian Alliance}

A good amount. It's kind of the reason that we're all there, when you think about it. It's because of them that we got where we're going. It's because of them we had to go so quickly. They are a huge influence. It's going to nudge things a bit in directions you weren't expecting. I wish I could talk more without spoiling it. Rhona Mitra, is lovely, I can say that. I do have to address some people's concerns, because I know people love to find things to hate; The Lucian Alliance isn't as tame as some people seem to think. We've only seen them a little bit and we don't really know what they've been up to. They might not have god-like powers like the Goa'uld , but trust me they are pretty freaking terrifying in their own way.

The NYPost has a write-up about The Gates. {Thanks Stella!] About Rhona:

A suburban housewife may like her white wine too much, but in "The Gates," your neighbor "is not addicted to alcohol, she's addicted to blood," Scharbo says of a character played by Rhona Mitra.

"She's been sober, in that she hasn't been feeding off humans for quite some time now," he explains. "But we open the first episode with her falling off the wagon."
